Recently Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, announced that in the near future this online retailer would decide on emergent modes of delivering packages. To the reporters’ surprise and probably most of the American nation, where Amazon is a sort of cult, the news was simply groundbreaking.
The CEO unveiled the so-called „Octocopters” as brand-new means of package transportation. In short, within the next four or five years they will use unmanned drones to provide their customers with gifts. „Prime Air vehicles will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road today” we read in a statement released by Amazon. Mr Bezos added „I know this looks like science fiction. It’s not. It drops the package. You come and get your package and we can do half-hour deliveries.” Fast and convenient for a client.
The problem is that Federal Aviation Administration formally prohibits this kind of flights now but it is likely that as early as 2015 such a view in the sky will become more prevailing. „From a technology point of view, we’ll be ready to enter commercial operations as soon as the necessary regulations are in place.” The USA legalized the commercial use of drones in 2012 but there has been a great deal of criticism lately.
During the interview on CBS, Bezos said that the FAA „do not currently have the awareness of their environment to be able to avoid flying into people. To deliver goods to people’s homes for example in residential areas, the UAVs must overfly densely populated towns and cities, something that today’s regulations prevent.”
Bezos assured that „this is all electric, it’s very green, it’s better than driving trucks around.” Not to mention that they „can’t land on somebody’s head while they’re walking around their neighbourhood.” The idea appears to be a landmark but still there are a lot ofprovisions to be done. One thing is for sure, it is a new meaning to the phrase e-commerce wars.
