Why People Fear Friday the 13th

Every one of us to some extent does believe in different superstitions like broken mirrors, black cats or walking under a ladder. The irrational fear of Friday the 13th is by far the most common one. There are some people who don’t engage in any activities because they are convinced that something bad is going to happen when it comes around. So why is Friday the 13th considered such an evil day?

To start with, there are several theories of how the ominous day came to be the harbinger of misfortune. In numerology, 12 is a complete number because it’s linked to highly important facts such as 12 months of the year, zodiac signs and mythical facts like the gods of Olympus.

If you feel uneasy about getting out of bed today, you may suffer from paraskavedekatriaphobia – fear of Friday the 13th.

Thus, as 13 exceeds 12 by one, it is considered a sign of bad luck among many cultures. In Norse mythology, 13 is deemed unlucky because of the event that took place in Valhalla, a majestic hall located in Asgard. Twelve gods were feasting when a thirteenth guest Loki, a cunning and malicious god, arrived to murder Balder. The number 13 is also significant to Christians, for it is the number of guests who were present at the Last Supper. Do you need more evidence? There you go.

Some people are so paralyzed with fear on Friday the 13th that they refuse to set foot on airplanes, conduct business or leave the house on this sinister day. Meanwhile, recent studies have shown that the iconic unlucky day is actually safer than the average Friday due to the fact that people tend to be more careful.
