Did you know that The London Underground, commonly known as the tube, was the first urban underground railway? At the very beginning Londoners were very sceptical about it and even called it a sewer railway. In the next few years, however, they quickly appreciated its advantages.
Engineers began constructing the Underground in 1860 and three years later the first line was ready. Can you imagine that? The idea of the tube was to decrease traffic jams and traffic congestion in a fast-growing city where hackney carriages could be stuck for a long time.
Nowadays the citizens of London and tourists visiting the city cannot imagine their lives without one of the most efficient means of transport. Those who have already used the London Underground know perfectly well that there are various ways to change lines but in general it is simple with a good map. Below you can find the underground plan.
As far as people are concerned, the English are always kind and helpful. Don’t be surprised when they offer you help if they think you’re lost. They also hate wasting their time so it is possible that you will see them reading a good book or magazine.
