The word twerk has recently been added to Oxford Dictionaries Online. We find out that it stands for „dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.”
But was it Miley Cyrus’ twerk at the VMAs that was ground zero for this seemingly unexpected hype? While twerking may be new to some of you, it’s been around since 1990s! This booty-bounce-heavy dance was born out of New Orleans’ music scene due to amazing fusion of a hip-hop genre centered around call-and-response vocals.In 2005 Beyonce’s song „Check On It” featured the line „Dip it, pop it, twerk it, stop it, check on me tonight.” A year later Justin Timberlake sang „Let me see what ya twerkin’ with.”
